Thai drama: Battle of the Writers

Battle of the Writers is a 12 episode Thai BL drama.
Mydramalist summary: Author Ob-un is accused of plagiarizing another writer named Shan. However, the former denies the accusations, which leads to the pair’s unexpected encounter. Shortly after, Ob-un and Shan come across each other again as they join a team of writers from multiple genres to work on a new novel.

My notes:

• Revolves around five guys writing a novel together. The MC and ML also have a childhood friend past.
• Features interesting approaches to in-universe storytelling: When the characters are telling stories, reading, or writing, we sometimes see that as scenes reminiscent of live theatre. Social media and texting are represented as the characters sitting around a table. This was more engaging than simply watching them talk or text all the time.
• The story is promising for the first three episodes or so, but doesn’t deliver ultimately. Major storylines get dropped, absurd scenes where the characters pretend to be animals and make fools of themselves on public transport, and we never really find out the plot of the book they are writing. I also could have done without the ‘faking a disability to force physical closeness with your caregiver’ bit.
• We get a bunch of disconnected scenes showing us the content of the novel being written. It’s nice to see pretty boys in wuxia getup making out, but not anywhere near enough to carry the show. Although I kinda ship the fantasy counterparts more than the ‘real’ characters, haha.
• Best part of the show was the wuxia version of Ob-Un, he’s pretty cute.


Overall it was no masterpiece, but had its moments ❤
