autodach: Count von Count reading (Graf)
I read Huai Dao/The Way of the Evil, a BL novel by Priest.

Excerpt from the summary:
This is a detective story filled with all kinds of people—from those with abnormal behavior to the mentally unstable—with numerous absurd cases with handsome men and beautiful women interwoven in them. […]
A series of missing children, corpses down the drain, a murderer who died and was revived, an obsessive, serial bomber who targets public buses, the bloody words on the walls belonging to a family all murdered…

And here are my thoughts, no spoilers:

• You can tell this is an earlier work, it’s not as polished as Priest’s newer novels. Nevertheless, I greatly enjoyed myself reading! The ending was a bit rushed, though - one more chapter would have worked wonders.

• Some of the story beats are literally the same in Mo Du, and the two stories have a similar vibe overall. It’s mostly the main characters and main couple’s relationship where they differ. I guess you could say Huai Dao walked so Mo Du could run :D

• Some side characters are from one of Priest’s other novels (I think). This is probably awesome if you know this novel, but makes these characters a little too enigmatic if you don’t.

• The main relationship is simple and straightforward. Shen Yexi goes from being mildly annoyed by Jiang Hu to fondness for his quirks. There’s nothing wrong with it, but it’s also not exceedingly exciting (so only a normal amount of excitement, heh). I like their interactions towards the end of the story, when they’re starting to settle into the relationship.
I feel that this quote sums up their vibe in the later chapters:
Shen Yexi grinned, because he found Jiang Hu’s expression when he was playing dirty tricks attractive. It made him want to pull him into his arms to massage him—Of course, that was as long as the dirty tricks were not meant for him.

The puzzle pieces of all the previous cases are being put together now. No character has the complete picture (until the very end). There are multiple characters who think they are the great mastermind with all the cards, but none of them are correct about this.
This book always delivers on its promises. You frequently get a sense that Fei Du is Up To Something – and he totally is! Constantly. I love how smart he is.

Fei Du keeps repeatedly insisting he isn’t traumatized and his father never abused him, all while showing symptoms of exactly this Trauma. Luo Wenzhou finally catches on and finds out the extent of Fei Chenyu’s conduct. I was totally right about this whole situation from the start!

Luo Wenzhou and Fei Du are such a great couple. I can’t get enough of them <3
And they are both so smug about their relationship XD

This Novel was absolutely amazing and I’m so glad I took the plunge into it.

I am still in the middle of Under the Skin, but I’m already planning to watch the Mo Du adaption Justice in the Dark next ^^

I had a blast with part 4. Seriously, this book is so good. I’m hoping it might gain more fans as the drama adaption is airing right now.

Unfortunately Covid hit me hard while I was reading this book. So there was a bit of a gap in my reading and some details may or may not actually be fever dreams, but oh well.

About the main couple

I realized how rare it is in BL to have the main characters get together early on and see them actually be a couple in everyday life. And it’s so good.

Luo Wenzhou and Fei Du have Communication and Honesty going on. It is better to say "I cannot tell you this" than to lie and obscure and ruin your relationship. There is a lengthy scene of Fei Du confessing quite a few things to Luo Wenzhou and them getting clarity about their relationship status and it’s probably my favourite part.

Priest is really good at making characters act like adults in general.

Their relationship feels loving, effortlessly – a part of these characters and their lives rather than tacked on top.

The only thing I disliked about these two: They fight over who gets to top. What a tired trope.

Story/ Themes

If I had to identify a theme it would be passing on bad behavior to one’s children.

Fei Du is afraid he has inherited his Fathers sadism, either via genes or parenting. He has such a low opinion of himself. I noticed that he claims his father never abused him, right after describing treatment that I most definitely consider child abuse.

Spoiler for the murder case )

That school is an outpost of hell; filled with rich and entitled little bullies.
And it’s no wonder – their parents are also rich and entitled, throwing their weight around to protect their spawn from consequences.

In one scene, a child tries to bribe Luo Wenzhou and Fei Du, as that’s apparently the way to deal with police he has learned.

On another note, I want to mention Xiao Haiyang, although I don’t have a lot of insight. But it’s just nice to have a character with autistic vibes who is fully fledged and complex.

I finished part 3 of Mo Du.

In this part I actually enjoyed the characters and relationships more than the criminal investigation.

My favourite scene was right at the start: Luo Wenzhou covering Fei Du's eyes to shield him from the violent video message.

I’m getting strong autistic vibes from Xiao Haiyang, to put it mildly. It feels realistic that his autistic traits can be either an asset or a problem depending on the situation.

I WAS on to something last time with the "Fei Du didn't change anything in his father's office"!

Spoilers for Fei Du’s questionable interior design choices )

Main Couple get their first kiss in this part! And we jump straight to breath control kink, huh. Nice.

Then there’s this bit:

“Fei Du, if I didn’t have a reason, didn’t have any logic, if I’d only said, ‘I trust you,’ what would you have done?”

Fei Du froze. Then the corners of his eyes curved craftily, and he purposefully lowered his voice.

“I’d be very moved, wanting nothing better than to go down on one knee at your feet.”

“Less of that fucking nonsense.”

Luo Wenzhou leaned back.

“You’d only have thought I was either stupid or lying.”

Fei Du smiled, but he didn’t refute him.

This exchange is great. They value each other for their intelligence. See an equal in each other. Actively refuse the idea of blind trust.

Part 3 does not have anything approaching a satisfying ending. I wonder to what extend the case will continue in part 4.

I finished reading book 2 of Mo Du/Silent Reading.

It didn’t hold back with its mature themes, which I appreciate.
This time the major theme is child abuse, specifically sexual abuse. Heavy stuff, pulled off expertly by priest.

We also get multiple characters who are both victims and perpetrators of crimes, and some other exploration of victimhood as a concept.

I really, really liked Guo Heng and the whole sequence of events surrounding him.

Spoilers for Guo Heng's story )

Mild Spoiler for Fei Du's backstory )

I’m excited to see the main couple progress in their relationship in part 3. Will they get together 🙈

My favourite scene: Fei Du failing to carry the coffee machine up the stairs
