I finished reading book 2 of Mo Du/Silent Reading.

It didn’t hold back with its mature themes, which I appreciate.
This time the major theme is child abuse, specifically sexual abuse. Heavy stuff, pulled off expertly by priest.

We also get multiple characters who are both victims and perpetrators of crimes, and some other exploration of victimhood as a concept.

I really, really liked Guo Heng and the whole sequence of events surrounding him.

He spent years in prison, he’s traumatized, he lost his daughter... but at least he saved that one girl back then. Or so he thought. To have that one consolation, that one ray of light taken away when it finally dawns on him he never saved anyone - possibly even made it all worse? Horrifying.

He’s a very tragic character, but it never feels forced or like a tear-jerker.

When his story ends with Luo Wenzhou revealing to him what actually happened 20 years ago, it feels respectful instead.

Fei Du himself being a victim of child abuse was revealed, fittingly in this part 2 that is all about children coming to harm. We also learn more about his current relationship to his comatose father, if you can call it that.

It's quite interesting that he apparently hasn’t changed anything in his father’s office, despite it being his office now.
Is he expecting his father to wake up? Does he want him to?

I’m excited to see the main couple progress in their relationship in part 3. Will they get together 🙈

My favourite scene: Fei Du failing to carry the coffee machine up the stairs
