Howdy! My screenplay takes place in rural North Dakota in November 1996, and two teenage characters are fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation. I know the bat'leth as a weapon was introduced in the show long ago, but when did replicas and toys become widely sold? Would it be realistic for a working-class young woman to have a mini bat'leth she could use as a knife in that year? I also read that the mek'leth (smaller Klingon scimitar) was introduced in DS9 and also appeared in First Contact. How early were replicas of those available to fans?
Thanks a million to you all! Would also love to hear any other miscellaneous stories or details of the TNG+DS9 fandom of the 90s, to give some extra oomph and care to an underrepresented community :)

2025 End-of-Year Writing Meme

I haven't done this meme in a few years, but I thought I'd do it again this year!

My writing year started out strong; then I crashed for a few weeks in March, and by the time I was recovering, it all fell into a ditch due to work-related lack of time and sheer exhaustion. July and August ended up my worst writing months since the start of WED. But I recovered toward the end of the year, even though work picked up again in November, so the end result was pretty good anyway!

Some statistics:

Total number of posted stories in 2025: 12 - one fewer than in 2024; I hope to write more things again in 2026!

Total word count (posted): 88,174 - about 18k more than 2024: while I wrote fewer stories, many more of them were on the longer side. In fact, this is the second-highest amount of words I've posted in a year, only beaten by 2018 with 97,933 words.

Total word count (written): 155,611 - about 6k more than 2024. The last time I wrote more than this was in 2018; I hope to get back there some day.

Highest monthly word count (posted): 30,631 (December) - almost 20k of this is due to [community profile] ficinabox reveals being delayed for three weeks; the rest is Yuletide.

Highest monthly word count (written): 57,548 (February) - my best writing month since I started keeping track in a spreadsheet back in 2014! Of course part of that was that I ditched my [community profile] highadrenalineexchange fic post-deadline and wrote something entirely new, LOL. Maybe it's no wonder that I fell into a slump after HA reveals in early March. *g*

Most words written in a day: 6,583 (1st March) - the final rush to the HA finish line!
Fewest words written in a day: 1 (9th September) - before my writing started to recover a bit towards the end of the month.

Months I actually posted fic: 6 - one fewer than 2024.

more meme and numbers )

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?

Mainly, I want to write more words than in 2025, finish more stories, and post fic in more months.

Reccer's Notes: Murder mystery where Harry Du Bois investigates a murder he himself committed, putting him right in the middle of the Kira case. Very funny! The dialogue is perfectly in character, the art is fantastic, and I love how the entire fic is told in the style of the game.

Content Notes: major character death (Light Yagami is dead), graphic description of corpses similar to that of Disco Elysium canon

Felt I didn’t manage too much book-reading last year, for a variety of reasons, but apparently I still managed to knock a few things off the slopes of Mt. TBR, so. Not too bad.

Definite favorite read was Brainwyrms. Which is a qualified rec because it’s not going to be for everyone, but it sure was for me!!!

Welcome aboard WED, everyone! Glad to see you all here this month, may it be a great one for writing!

It snowed here last night! And unlike the previous time this winter, it was cold enough that the snow stayed on the ground. I really should have gone for a walk, but felt very lazy today and only went out briefly for groceries.

Yesterday's and today's writing

Yesterday, I only wrote a small snippet and made some notes - but they were important pieces: I figured out how to end my [community profile] fffx fic!

For this story, I had a great beginning and I knew some thing I wanted to have happen, but until yesterday I was completely unclear about how to end it. And I always struggle with writing when I don't know what I'm writing towards. I find it really hard to write without having an ending in mind! Now I know what I'm aiming for - the story still has a gaping hole in the middle, but now it's just about plotting a course from Point A to Point B. *g*

Today, I poked at various [community profile] fandomtrees things, but didn't really make much progress. Hopefully tomorrow will be more productive!

When I'm busy, I sometimes forget or just don't find any time/energy to write. So my strategy is to keep a physical notebook on my pillow so I'll be reminded when I go to bed.

The other thing that helps - because I do try to write every day, and don't want to break my streak - is to use alibi sentences with abandon. (Those are the sentences you write just so you can say you wrote something. No matter how short they are, they're still something - and enough of them in a chain can add up to considerably more. *g*)

I'm Brightknightie, a middle-aged fan who loves Dreamwidth and wishes we could all spend more time playing fandom with each other here. I've updated my Dreamwidth profile. I won't repeat here those profile points of who I am fannishly; most of you here know them already.

I will say that the fandoms that I'd most love to discuss these days are The Legend of Zelda (all incarnations) and Dungeons & Dragons (cartoon, 1983-85), and those are what I expect I'm most likely to write fic for this year, myself, give or take exchanges. I'm hoping for a solid year in the MCU; we shall see. I occasionally post about comics; I'm looking forward to the inaugural Thundarr the Barbarian run launching soon. I lost my Journey to the West touchstones when I left Twitter and still miss that; it's too bad they don't do Dreamwidth. I'm happy to reply about Trek, Who, HL, FK, B5, Buffyverse, Pokémon, Robotech, Sailor Moon, Ruroni Kenshin, Zorro; the works of Lois McMaster Bujold, Sherry Thomas, Rex Stout, Alexandre Dumas, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins; and many, many more; I'm not highly likely to post about them myself.

For most of its run, this fannish journal was specifically about Forever Knight (FK); that's changed. I've been bringing more fannish subjects to it in recent years. I rarely post about real life. I think most of you here know that I have a full-time job, fence (foil and rapier-and-dagger), and am Catholic (please don't leap to conclusions; ask if you want to know).

Why am I doing the snowflake challenge? I'd like to help support the vitality of our Dreamwidth community! I hope to engage and be engaged with more here all year round. I'd love to find more folks who want to chat about The Legend of Zelda and Dungeons & Dragons (cartoon), of course! And I'd love to find more new and missed and discovered fannish things to delight in with you. ♥

China Books Review Article

Thought people might be interested in this article "Translated Chinese Literature: New Fiction" from China Books Review.

2025 has seen a bumper crop for Chinese literature in translation. We recommend five recent titles, from gritty tales of the northeast to conjoined fiction from Hong Kong.

Of course, no danmei or baihe on the list, that's not nearly ~literary~ enough for this kinda thing, but I still thought it was nice to learn about some other titles outside my usual c-novel reading...

trobadora: (Zhu Yilong - head over heels)
[personal profile] trobadora in [community profile] sid_guardian
For Yuletide, I wrote for Zhu Yilong's Thermos "Flower Series" commercials - if you're not familiar with them, they're worth a watch! Here's a playlist with most of them (though the first video is a bit atypical), and here's one more commercial.

Here's what I wrote (I talk a bit more about it on my journal, in case you're interested):
  • One story for the "Flower Series" commercials - this features Zhu Yilong's character as a dragon, and a white cat whose human form I imagined as played by Bai Yu::
    Heart-Seed, Heart-Flower (8,465 words)
    Fandom: Thermos "Flower Series" Commercials
    Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Characters: Zhu Yilong's Character (Thermos "Flower Series" Commercials), White Cat (Thermos "Flower Series" Commercials)
Content Tags: Magic Flowers, Magic Waters, Dragons, Cats, Shape-Shifters, Multiple Worlds, Lonely Wanderers, Magical Quests, Saving Worlds with a Magic Bottle

    Summary:

The bottle was plain and unadorned, the lotus pattern that would have signalled the success of his quest nowhere in evidence.

    He'd failed.
  • And one Guardian crossover for the above (a Guardian canon divergence/fix-it for the ending):
Dragon of Flowers, Dragon of the City (2,275 words)
Fandoms: 镇魂 | Guardian (TV 2018), Thermos "Flower Series" Commercials
    Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Characters: Da Qing, Zhu Yilong's Thermos Character, Zhao Yunlan, Shen Wei, SID team
Content Tags: Canon Divergence (for Guardian), Episode Related, Episode 37, Fix-It, Hallows Shenanigans, The Wick of the Guardian Lantern, Magical Flowers, Cross-dimensional Wanderers, Saving Worlds with a Magic Bottle, Dragon City is named after a dragon

    Summary:

Lao-Zhao leaned forward, resting an elbow on a knee. "I thought you got all your memories back."

"Yeah, yeah." Da Qing waved a hand in the air, dismissively. "Not remember like 'I don't know my past', remember like 'where did I put my keys'. Except not my keys."
trobadora: (Da Qing - megaphone)
[personal profile] trobadora
My second Yuletide fic is a crossover! My recipient prompted for a Guardian crossover with Da Qing, so I included a tiny cameo in Heart-Seed, Heart-Flower - and then I couldn't resist writing more about what happened.

Because:
  • Da Qing is always so much fun to write!

  • I had a dragon! And Dragon City should have a dragon in its history, right?

  • And most importantly, my story was already about someone travelling realms and healing worlds with magic water/flowers, so naturally I had to have him do the same for Guardian and provide a fix-it there, too. *g*
(The story turned out very Guardian-heavy, so it's just as well that I didn't manage to finish it in time to put it in the main collection.)

Also, I have to share this because I used it for the fic, and it's very cool: Here is a time-lapse video of a cotton plant! It has white flowers, while the one in the story is yellow, but still. *g*

Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Theme: crack treated seriously, epistolary, no canon required, outsider pov

Summary:

I've recently been unexpectedly promoted to lead a department in my organisation, wrote the anonymous emailer.

As there was no one working here when I arrived, my manager, who is head of the organisation, had promised me the choice of my own assistants. However, without warning, he simply presented me with an additional assistant. This new assistant’s first act on his first day was to let a dog into the office. It took several hours to catch and clean up after this dog and it has only been downhill from there. I admit I'm not entirely sure what to do with this assistant now I'm stuck with him. I'm hoping you have some advice?

Kind regards,
New Manager

Abigail Bailey runs a successful management advice blog. One frequent contributor is from a workplace with some... issues.

Reccer's Notes:
The Magnus Archives is a horror audio drama in which the main character starts a new position as archivist in an organization named Magnus Institute that specializes on investigating strange/magical phenomena. Very soon, strange things start to happen to him too. Also, it turns out that his workplace itself is ... not what you could call safe.

This story starts with the idea that the main character writes to a management advice blog about the strange things about his workplace, and becomes a regular writer. The fanfic is told in the form of this advice blog as it could appear on the internet: We get the mails he writes in, and the bloggers answers, and also the comment section. It's hilarious, but also it's taken so seriously as the story progresses and gets darker.

As an outsider POV, it really brings out how horrible the whole Magnus Archives story really is. It also shows very well how the story starts so inconspicuous and then boils the characters in horror like a lobster it a pot - and in this fanfic, the character doesn't event write to the advice blog about what's actually happening (because of secrecy), only the workplace safety circumstances. It's such a fascinating outsider POV.

Since it doesn't expect any canon knowledge, it can be read fandom-blind. Even without fandom-knowledge it's a hilarious and tragic advice blog story and in my case, it was my intro to the story, which I listened to after finishing this fanfic, so it was great advertisement for The Magnus Archives. (Note that it contains out of context but significant spoilers if you're going in fandom blind. For me this added to the re-read factor of the fanfic.)

Content Notes:
  • depictions of outrageously bad workplace safety
  • (canon-typical) dysfunctional interpersonal relationships
  • lighter on the actual supernatural horror than the original canon
  • out of context (but significant) spoilers if read fandom blind

Summary: A single artichoke appears onboard the Revenge, and Izzy Hands is nowhere to be found. Naturally, the crew draws the most logical conclusion.

Reccer's Notes: The crew finds a single artichoke on the Revenge and draw the very erroneous conclusion that Izzy has been turned into a vegetable by a sea-witch.  This is delightfully funny, as the crew try to protect the artichoke from getting eaten, among other things.  It very much fits in with the silliness of season 1 of the show.

In non writing thoughts, by which I mean I wanted to talk about aikido and then realised that maybe I should mention watching a movie first, since I finally watched the new Benoit Blanc movie. xD

I watched Wake Up Dead Man today with [personal profile] hafnia, who had seen it once before and was like "I am BITING MY TONGUE not to point out the REALLY GOOD FORESHADOWING", paused the movie at two points to tell me about (a) her opinions that the reading list in-universe could've been better (with her suggestions) and (b) A Science Complaint (while going "this is the only thing that annoys me about this movie"), and was delighted to agree with me about how well they used LIGHT. The cinematography was gorgeous, the plot was very fun, and I adored Father Jud and Martha and enjoyed going "ughhhh" about how awful many other characters were. The film quotes/references I caught were also great!

also my twin messaged me right as I was finishing the movie to tell me about a post he'd seen saying that the opening scene of the movie was filmed at the same location as Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" music video, including a tweet (bsky version) (bweet, my brain wants to say, but I think it's skeet. or just, y'know. tweet.) from Rian Johnson going "yes, it was, and I was the only person on set excited about this fact", which I thought was very funny in its own right and also incredible timing.

anyway, AIKIDO

Last night we had a new year's eve practice, and there weren't many people there, but—

There is so much joy in doing aikido on a mat where the practice is meant as meditation, and there are few enough people that you don't need to worry about throwing anyone into anyone else (or off the mat), and the people who are there are all advanced and so you don't need to worry too much about taking care of them (because their ukemi will take care of them).

let me save your reading pages from how much I'm talking about aikido )

Sensei also was like "you could take nidan tomorrow and be fine" when I said that it was sort of frustrating knowing that in this, the lead-up to when I'll be taking nidan (at the end of May), I'll probably not be practicing more than once a week on average. She's right! I know she's right! I could take it tomorrow if I were asked to!

But it'll be better with more practice and active reminders of the stuff we don't do very often. Reversals (uke becomes nage). Weapon take-aways. Some nage-holds-the-jo, maybe? I'm solid on everything else, I think, though it's always nice to review koshinage. Working with friends on shodan prep last year means that most of it's in my body via taking ukemi, anyway, which is good.

Start of a new year, fun! I hope it's a good year; certainly I'll try and work to make it good for me. <3

[personal profile] hafnia got me to sign up for [community profile] getyourwordsout with her this year, which should be fun. I'm doing it as a habit pledge, because that's usually not very hard for me and tracking wordcount seemed exhausting. (Which also means that Write Every Day folk will start seeing me around again in those posts. xD I have missed that since my writing brain plunged into a hole over the summer! I think I've crawled out of it now!)

anyway, VERY IMPORTANTLY, Yuletide creators have been revealed, so I can talk about what I wrote for it! :D

My assignment was for [personal profile] china_shop, and we matched on The Spear Cuts Through Water, a book I adore and which I offered because I was like "okay if someone requests this fantastic book surely they will have ideas for what to write" and also the idea of having an excuse to read the book while thinking about the voice and feel of the prose was exciting.

I wrote a brief epilogue fic, barely over 1k: After the Moon Rose Anew (T, 1,048 words, Jun/Keema, post-canon)

Judging by all the lovely comments, I succeeded in my goal of matching the novel's prose! Most people commented on the voice! Considering how beautiful and lyrical the prose is, it's truly a joy and a relief to know I could match it for even a thousand words.

Also, it was just fun to reference as much as I could of what I found really cool about the prose: the layered POVs, the omniscient style that drifted between POV easily, the occasional brief asides to background POVs... Honestly, the poetics are easier for me to be confident in! I know I can do poetic prose; it's the smooth movement between heads that seems natural and is easy to follow that I wanted to learn from.

And [personal profile] china_shop liked it, of course, which is the most important part of a gift—especially one for a friend!

Which: The odds of matching to a friend in Yuletide are... not that low if you both know you're in the same tiny fandom and that you're both going to request it, but I hadn't realised that [personal profile] china_shop was going to request The Spear Cuts Through Water until after I'd already offered it, and she could of course not know I would offer it! Certainly we'd talked about the book before, but it's still very special to have this kind of match happen by chance. <3

The other fic I wrote for Yuletide was a pinch hit. [personal profile] wolffyluna went up for PH, and one of the fandoms requested was Oathsworn, an actual play podcast I love. I knew that if WolffyLuna had listened to it, it was because of my promo posting about it. So, y'know. The pinch hit went up one evening, and I told myself that if it was still up when I got home from work the next day I could claim it.

It was still up. So. I claimed it, and proceeded to spend the weekend mainlining episode transcripts and internally screaming about what even I was going to write, oh god, this would've been a lot easier if I'd gotten it as an assignment (which I could have! I'd also offered Oathsworn!) due to the time crunch.

I'm very pleased with what I came up with, especially considering the time pressure. And WolffyLuna liked it, especially the scenes I added post-deadline because I was like "WAIT I NEED THIS TOO", which made me very happy that I'd taken the time to write and add them. <3

I dream of what I'll become next life (3.5k, T, CNTW, Waloot-centric) is a character study of my favorite character, and also includes a dive into the chosen of the gods, a specific religion within the world, and also Waloot's whole deal of being an ordinary person who died, came back, and was one of the most magically powerful people in the area by the time the story concluded. She has a lot of angst. I gave her a bit of time with some weird horses (as WolffyLuna requested!) as part of helping her deal with that.

This, and the gift WolffyLuna wrote for me (my suspicion that we'd be trading Oathsworn fics also factored into taking the PH), are the first works for the fandom on ao3! Yay for Yuletide! It's very exciting! I hope more people take a chance on this COMPLETE actual play podcast! An ongoing apocalypse, a last stand against the oncoming hordes, and a lot of people desperately doing their best to survive and be in community with each other despite not always liking each other very much!
