Oh my, this is a hard one!
I used the random question generator to give me 3 questions:

What's something that you recently learned that everyone else already knew?

Not that recently, but I learned this later than most: For most of my life, I had no idea that W and V are supposed to be different sounds (in English). I found out via Star Trek, of all things. The Chris Pine movies have a joke where Chekov fails to input a password because he can’t tell the difference – and neither can I! I was so confused, didn’t get the joke until I googled it. Still can’t hear a difference, but I know it’s there at least.


How difficult is it for you to try new things?

Oh god, so difficult. I am pulling myself into anything new like an exceptionally stubborn dog on a leash.


What's the best compliment you ever received?

“You’re ruthlessly pragmatic, I love that”

Yay for random questions, I did the same in my post.

Re v versus w, it‘s really good to know that some people really cannot hear a difference (which would not have occurred to me).

Also re new things, depending on whether I‘m doing them on my own or with other people involved they can be easy or hard.

The educational website I checked for the W had a warning banner along the lines of “If your native language is Russian or German, it’s possible you can’t even hear the difference”.
That explained it for both Chekov and me XD

Still can’t hear a difference, but I know it’s there at least.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure my parents never could hear the difference either (much less pronounce it, LOL). It's so fascinating, they sound completely different to me!

New things are hard, yeah. *fistbump*

It's interesting how our native language shape and restrict what sounds we hear in other languages.

I like to say that I am a devout empiricist. If something works, I believe in it; if it doesn't work, I don't believe in it; and I don't care a whole lot about what other people believe except where it seems likely that the world is generating multiple answers in different places.
